Prof. Vojtěch Havlas, M.D., PhD. is and orthopaedic and trauma surgeon in the Czech Republic. He graduated at 2nd School of Medicine at the Charles University in 1996. After graduation he has been appointed at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Motol University Hospital in Prague. He has completed a fellowship at the University of Minnesota in 2003. After completion of the orthopaedic specialist exam in 2005 he spent 4 years in the United Kingdom as a consultant in ortopedics and trauma surgery. After his return back to the Czech Republic in 2009 he became a vice-chairman and since 2021 the chairman of the Department of Ortopaedics and Traumatology, 2nd School of Medicine and Motol University Hospital. Prof. Havlas completed his Ph.D. thesis on “Biomechanics of knee articular cartiulage” in 2006, completed his habilitation in 2011 and become a professor of orthopaedics the the Charles University in 2018. He is currently a Vice-dean for Specialist Education at the 2nd School of Medicine at the Charles University in Prague. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Ministry of Health Czech Republic and a chairman of the National Accreditation Board for Orthopaedics.

Prof. Havlas has been involved in several international research and educational structures – i.e. ESSKA, ISAKOS, SICOT, ORS. He became a member of ESSKA in 2003 and he served as a chairman of ESSKA Integration Committee in 2008-2010. He was a chairman of SICOT Fellowship Committee in 2020-2023 and recently he is the national delegate of SICOT for Czech Republic. His research team has been collaborating with foreign universities and leading research experts in the field (University of Minnesota, University of Leipzig, Steadman-Hawkins Research Institute Colorado). Prof. Havlas is currently a general secretary of the Czech Society for Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy, and he was elected the president of the Czech Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology from January 2026. He will serve as the president of the ESSKA congress 2026 in Prague.

The main essence of clinical practice of prof. Havlas involves knee and shoulder surgery – PFJ reconstructions, axial realignment, cartilage treatment, complex arthroscopic reconstructions and arthroplasty. In paediatric orthopaedics he focuses at paediatric traumatology, leg lengthening, treatment of axial deformities and posttraumatic reconstructions. His research activities include biology of healing in orthopaedics, Mg alloy research, cartilage repair and biomechanics, stem cell therapy and paediatric trauma orthobiology. He received Shimomura SIROT Award (2001), Fulbright Research Fellowship – University of Minnesota (2002) and Knee and Shoulder ESSKA Fellowship – Milan, Galleazzi Orthopaedic Institute (2004). Prof. Havlas serves for several international scientific journals as a reviewer. He is a board member of Acta Chirurgiae Orthopaedicae et Tramatologiae Cechoslovaca and a corresponding member of International Orthopaedics.
