Prof. Dr. Michael T. Hirschmann is a full professor at Basel University and head of the University department of orthopaedic surgery and traumatology at Kantonsspital Baselland, Bruderholz, Switzerland. He also co-leads the Center of Musculoskeletal Diseases and heads a research unit at the University of Basel focusing on knee joint conditions.
He has published over 450 peer-reviewed papers and edited multiple textbooks on knee surgery and related topics. His research focuses on diagnostics and treatment of knee injuries, including cartilage, meniscus, and ligament damage, osteoarthritis (OA), primary and revision knee arthroplasty, and emerging technologies like robotics and AI.
He has also pioneered personalized approaches in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) based on his knee phenotype concept, moving away from systematic alignment methods.
Renowned globally as an authority on knee injuries and degenerative conditions, Prof. Hirschmann frequently lectures on evidence-based knee diagnostics and treatments. His contributions to 3D imaging technologies, including CT, MRI, and SPECT/CT, have advanced orthopedic diagnostics. He also serves as editor in chief of KSSTA.
For his research, he has received numerous national and international awards, including the Swiss Quality Award, ESSKA Research Award, and the AAOS Best Scientific Exhibit Award.
