Mehmet S. Demirhan, M.D.; is an actively practicing orthopaedic surgeon extensively renowned for his subspecialty in the surgery of the shoulder and elbow disorders. He is the current president of The European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow (SECEC-ESSSE) and head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Koç University School of Medicine.
Formerly, he served as Associate Dean in the very same institution as well. Dr. Mehmet Demirhan also chairs the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in American Hospital. Apart from more than 35 years devoted to the shoulder and elbow surgery, he is competent in sports traumatology and basic science. Besides professional exertions, Demirhan enjoys classical music and he regularly pursues renowned performances particularly in Europe. He is an experienced sailor as well. He is married and father to a boy, he is fluent in German and English.
After graduating from Istanbul University, Faculty of Medicine in 1984, he completed his residency in The Department of Orthopeadics in Heidelberg University with a scholarship granted by the German government on behalf of European Council. Between 1994-1995 he accomplished his fellowship of sports medicine in The Department of Orthopaedics in Pittsburgh University, USA, under the supervision of Dr. F. H. FU and Dr. S. L-Y. WOO. In 1996, he came back to The University of Istanbul and acquired an Associate Professorship. Dr. Demirhan had his Professorship in 2002, in the same institution. Dr. Demirhan was the Founding President of Turkish Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology between 2002-2004, subsequently undertook the presidency of Turkish Society Shoulder and Elbow Surgery between 2007-2009. He is regularly appointed as an examiner of European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology since 2008, as well as AO instructor and corresponding member of ASES (American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons) since 2010.
He served as President of Turkish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 2017-2019. Research and publication constitute the core of Dr. Demirhan’s professional career. He has published a considerable number of research as well as the authorship of many chapters and books with an H-index of 13. Along with his research activities, he also served in the publication community, as editor in chief in Acta Orthopaedica et Traumatologica Turcica, which is the official journal of the Turkish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. Dr. Demirhan is a frequent reviewer of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery since 2008. Between 2015-2018 Prof. Demirhan served as the associate editor responsible for Shoulder and Elbow section in the EFORT Open Reviews Journal. Mehmet Demirhan is known to be a dedicated surgeon to his patients, a wise mentor to his students and fellows and a distinguished opinion leader in the global community of the shoulder and elbow surgery.
